The Research On The History Of Chinese Science And Technology In Contemporary Germany

The academia in china has been paying more and more attention on the academic communication with foreign colleagues, but for some limitation, such kind of communication still should be deepened in some degree. Until now, there are not so many papers and books introducing the study on China in Germany, even less in the field of the history of Chinese Science & Technology. But in fact, the research on the Sinology and China in Germany has reached some achievements with high speed in recent year, especially in the sector of history of Chinese Science & Technology.In Germany, a lot of institutions have been making contributions to the research on the history of Chinese Science & Technology, such as the Study Group for the History and the Philosophy of Chinese Science and Technology in the Technical University of Berlin, the Institution for the Medicine History in the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich,the Max-Planck-Institute for the History of Science, and the international publication--East Asian Science, Technology, and Medicine which published in Germany and whose chief editor is Hans Ulrich Vogel in the university of Tuebingen. As a typical example in such field, "Studies in the Formation of Modern Chinese Scientific Terminologies" which is a multi-field and cross-nation project has been attracting many scholars in city or university from all over the world to participate in.As we all know, without the leading of some well-known scholars, and as well as the support from some very important institutions, such as Volkswagen Foundation, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft(DFG), and Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst(DAAD), such achievements on the history of Chinese Science & Technology could not have been reached. It's Welf Schnell who advocated to establish the Study Group for the History and the Philosophy of Chinese Science and Technology, Iwo Amelung who did some researchs on the hitory of Chinese water conservancy, the graphics and the physics, Dieter Kuhn whogot outstanding accomplishments in research on the history of Chinese fabric and Song Dynasty, Hans Ulrich Vogel who published lots of papers mainly related to the salt history in China, and attached himself to many activities sponsored by some academic organization, Paul U. Unschuld who showed more attention on the translation of the classcial books of Chinese medcine written in ancient years as well as he studied the history of Chinese medicine.Comparing with Chinese scholars, for German, there are less natural advantages in the research on the history of Chinese Science&Technology, but on the other hand, we also can find some special characteristics from their studies. For example,the scholars in Germany pay more attention on the unofficial history than the scholars in china, and they are good at collecting the data in different languages, so the formats of their researchs are very manifold. But in the aspect of possession and texual research of Chinese information, scholars in our country still keep predominance. In general, for short of the academic exchange with China, the research on the history of Chinese Science&Technology in Germany have not been known very well for most Chinese scholars. As I will show in this paper, the research on the history of Chinese Science&Technology in Germany at least has reached the same level as other foreign countries, and even keep ahead in the aspect of organizational system. So I' d like to say, there will be very bright future for the research on the history of Chinese Science&Technology in Germany. We should learn from each other' s strong points while furthering academic communication with Germany.
