The study on change of weather and climate extremes became an important aspect in modern climate change research. Based on the daily surface air temperature data from 200 stations and daily precipitation data th from 739 stations during the second half of the 20 century, schemes for analyzing climate extremes were designed mainly according to percentiles of a non-parametric distribution and the gross errors in the daily data were removed based on a newly designed Quality Control procedure. The spatial and temporal characteristics of change of climate extremes over China were studied, the major conclusions are summarized as: th 1. Slight decrease trends were found for the 95 percentiles of daily maximum temperatures during summer, but larger increase trends were revealed for the 5th percentiles of daily minimum temperatures during winter, especially in northern China. Moreover, the numbers of day with daily maximum temperature above 35℃show slight decrease trends, but the numbers of days with daily minimum temperature lower than 0℃ display significant decrease trends. 2. Increase trends in the numbers days experienced extreme high temperatures are obvious after mid-1980s. In northern China, the numbers of day with extreme low temperatures show significant decrease trends, while the numbers of day with extreme high temperatures exhibited significant increase trends. In southern China, numbers of days of extreme high temperatures in daytime show significant decrease trends, especially in southwest China. 3. By studying relationship between the extreme and the mean and variability of daily temperatures, the results reveal that in northern China the mean value increased largely, and the variability decreased. As a result, extreme low temperature increased, and the extreme high temperature also increased; in the Mid-lower Reaches of the Yangtze, the mean value increased slightly, but the variability decreased. As a result,...
