Research on extreme events is a significant field of climate change, which mainly contains two aspects of temperature and precipitation.Based on the daily surface air temperature and precipitation data from 756 stations over China during 1960 and 2012,18 extreme events indices were calculated.Analyzed the spatial and temporal characteristics of these indices, and obtain the distribution of temperature extreme events and precipitation extreme events over China. The major conclusions are summarized as:1.The frequency of extreme high temperature events had a growing trend;the frequency of low-temperature extremes decreased during the past half century. The descending trend of cold events was more significant than warm events.2.In addition to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, most parts of China could suffer from extremely high temperature. The possibility decline from south to north.Maximum value of temperature centered in Turpan Basin, the hottest area of China.Extremely low temperature could rarely happen in the areas that south to Qinling Mountain-Huai River line.North China was very likely to suffer from extremely cold weather, but the frequency has declined.3.There was no significant trend of PRCPTOT,R10mm,R20mm and R50mm.However,R95p and R99p showed a slightly upward trend during 1960 and 2012.Intensity of extreme precipitation was strengthened.4.North to the Qinling Mountain-Huai River line would experience continuous drought events.South China would be very likely to experience precipitation extreme events. The most likely to happen extremely heavy rain areas were south-east of Jiangxi Province, west of Fujian Province and coastal areas in South China.Besides, parts of Sichuan Province could suffer extremely heavy rainstorm due to the southwest vortex.5.China could be divided into 10 parts.Extreme events had different effects on these 10 areas. Each part of area could suffer from one or more extreme events.
