Geographic Information Science, which combines real-world spatial information with the theory and technology of information science, has fully developed in recent years especially with the development of network and distributed technology. At present, GIS not only provides information service, computing analysis and decision support for professional researchers, but also faces a more wide spread users. Anyone can gain what he is interested in.GIS must adjust itself to satisfy multi-level and different needs in various aspects from concept, data management to structure, system design and system developing in the new era. In order to break the obstacle between different systems, to connect all these system through network, to reach high-efficient and coherent storage and processing, and to solve such problems as heterogeneous information, distributed computing, interoperability, etc., the thesis proposes the realization of Open-environment-based GIS Service Architecture after careful review of trends and development in this field home and abroad. There lie five chapters in the thesis. In the first chapter, the thesis reviews the developing course of GIS, and points out that GIS must integrate with network technology in order to realize geographic information service. On the basis of discussing existing problems in the GIS development, the thesis presents the emphasis and issues hi the research.Chapter two introduces the concept, characteristic and forms of the realization of Open-environment-based GIS Service. The key point of breaking information gap is to realize uniform standard and resource interoperability.Chapter three takes spatial metadata technology, GIS object-oriented model and distributed computation technology as main technologies of the realization of Open-environment-based GIS Service, which are developed to solve problems such as spatial information transition, information query and interoperability. While the theoryof the three key technologies are presented, a simple metadata database and a complete GIS object-oriented model are developed. Meanwhile, the thesis analyzes the advantages of building distributed computation environment with Java and RMI-IIOP.Chapter four discusses the advantages and solutions of Open-environment-based GIS Service realization. Two prototype systems are completed with the help of state 863 project, SIG-based Urban Spatial information Service System, and chain supermarkets dispatch project. Finally, the thesis summarizes main problems and solution in the research, and further discussion and consideration are presented.
