There are rich resources of flowers and many of them are widely used as traditional medicines and healthy foods in China. Flowers are of important value in nourishment and health protection, and have become a hot field of exploitation and utilization of biologically-active substances from natural plants. However, few toxicological safety evaluation and functional study are conducted. To provide theoretical base on flowers as healthy foods and medicial meterials, it is quite necessary to conduct toxicological and functional tests on edible flowers.Based on former results and dietetic tradition, a comprehensive and scientific evaluation had been made on the toxicity and function of water extract of rose, which had higher antioxidant activity and more resource. The main results were shown as follows:1.Abnormality was not found in KM mice during 7-day period of observation after given a treatment with a LD50>10000mg/kg.bw by mouth, which showed that 'Pingyin' rose was acute nonpoisonous. Both S. and G D. kept normal in mice, which showerd that 'Pingyin' rose does not have hereditary toxicity.2. A 30-day feeding experiment with water extract of rose in SD mice indicated that there are no remarkable differences between various treatments, implying water extract of rose having no chronic toxicity.3. Drosophila, raised by different concentrations of water extracts from rose (0.1 %,0.25 %, 0.5 %, 1 %), had obviously longer life-length, demonstrating that suitable amount of water extracts from rose is of anti-aging effects.
