Aiming at spatial phenomena or problems studied, the essential tasks of geographical data modeling are the description of spatial data organization and spatial database model design, which includes definition of geographical entity and the relationship, determination of data or objects and their topological relations, physical organization of the date, storage route and data structure,Geographical database itself has a number of problems which is badly in need of solution, for examples, accurate and effective expression of geographical phenomena with a geo-data model, the standardization and automation of spatial database modeling by adoption of new computer technology. Solutions to these questions are vital to the quality level and its applications of the geographical information systems. On the basis of Geodatabase, the third generation data model, this thesis carries out a study on geo-data model design and modeling in the geo-database establishment in association with the set-up of database for the estuarine and coastal geographic information system (ECGIS). Some principal results are given below.(1) Aiming at the confusion existing in spatial data model classification and conceptual uncleamess in the field of GIS, it is concluded that the geo-data organization through combination of object-oriented principle and relational database is the trend of the third generation data model development.(2) On the basis of Geodatabase model, the establishment of the ECGIS database was carried out with the use of UML and Case tool. The shortcoming and deficiency of the existing database modeling solution were discussed.(3) This thesis also elaborated the geographical data model for dealing with estuary and coast data. The estuarine and coastal geographical database model is developed, which includes marine elements, terrestrial surface watersystem, metedata and administrative division.(4) The database framework for ECGIS is finally established.
