3D terrain visualization has become increasingly in recent years because it has wide application in many fields, such as battlefield environment simulation, entertainment and games, cruise in terrain scene, road choosing, soil plan, webGIS, etc.The research of 3D terrain visualization is an important part of Geographic Information System(GIS), Digital Photography(DP), and Remote Sense(RS),and drawing a high realistic 3D graph is an important research project of Computer Graphic(CG). With the development and innovation of Computer Science, Computer Graphic and Modern Mathematics theory, some entirely new research directions, such as Virtual Reality(VR) and Scientific Visualization(SV), are attracting more and more researchers. Terrain is one of the most complex natural scenery on the earth. The theory and algorithm of 3D terrain visualization are problems that many research fields are facing. The problem of 3D terrain visualization can be solved with the combination of theories and technologies of many branches. So, the visualization , reality and measurement of terrain can be solved essentially. In this paper, the fundamental theory and method of DTM modelling, include Regular Square Grid(RSG) and Triangulated Irregular Network(TIN),is studied. Then, the basic principles of drawing 3D graph by computer are discussed, particularly explained the fundamental theory of coordinate transform, projection transform and light model. Based on the analysis of OpenGL, study on the terrain visualization, summarize the previous work, develop a 3D terrain visualizationsystem------TVisual. At last, study and practise on the 3D terrain simulation thatbased on Fractal theory.
