The karyotypes reported in genus Paa (Anura: Ranidae) fall into three types: 2n =26, 2n=40, and 2n=64. Multiply banding patterns could not be induced by conventional method, C-banding and Ag-NORs techniques in amphibian. BrdU replication banding has proved to be the only effective method demonstrating multiple banding patterns in amphibian. Paa boulengeri and Paa yunnanensis were treated with conventional method and BrdU replication banding technique. The karyotype of Paa boulengeri of Emei Mount showed different characters with those in other papers reported, where the only second constriction of a small chromosome was reported in the short arm, which, however, located in the long arm in this paper. The sort order of chromosomes and arm ratios also showed some differences with those papers reported. Paa boulengeri of Qingcheng Mount of Dujiangyan, Sichuan was supposed to have unusual sex chromosomes system, where highly differentiated karyotypes were demonstrated between male and female, and male showed similar karyotype with Paa boulengeri of Emei Mount of Sichuan Province, Yunnan Province, and Guizhou Province, but female had two pairs of highly differentiated heteromorphic chromosomes, which were considered as sex chromosomes. Z1Z1 Z2Z2/Z1W1Z2W2 (male/female). Although hardly differentiated by morphological characters, Paa boulengeri of Qingcheng Mount showed highly differentiated chromosomes compared with populations of Emei Mount of Sichuan Province,...
