Since the appearence of WebGIS in America in 1995, its applications have spreaded over most departments or trades by the ten year's development. The commercial WebGIS sofewares mainly include ArcGIS, MapInfo, MGE/GeoMedia and Maptitude. They are expensive, and large-scale spatial database and complex GIS server needed on the whole. In practical application, enterprises usually expect customizing map service, which needs some basic GIS functions, for example map browse, entity location, distance measure, and has lower price, certain spatial analysis ability, well expansibility and faster response, namely light WebGIS. Therefore the development of light WebGIS based on vector graphic criterion is studied.Because SVG is not for the WebGIS development specially, so through the research of model and implement technology of webGIS, and SVG, DOM, AJAX technology, considering scalability and response speed of light WebGIS, the paper proposes a four hybrid architecture of light WebGIS based on SVG, and organizes spatial data by object-oriented data modeling. Then coordinate transform, map loading, map operation and spatial query are studied in detail. Finally, based on the actual requirement of oil field enterprises, an application example of light WebGIS based on SVG is implemented.It is proved that the light WebGIS platform has better expansibility, faster browse speed, and avoid the shortcoming of commercial WebGIS platform that has high price and weak ability to information integration, and satisfies requirement of releasing customizing map service.
