At the beginning this paper analyzes the environmental characteristics of estuarial and coastal zones, then based on in person practice the author advances the idea of developing Changjiang River Estuary Marine Geographic Information System. This paper introduces the states of Changjiang River Estuary in brief, and summarizes the previous works of other researchers using GIS as tools, then the significance, the goal and the system key framework of the Changjiang River Estuary Marine Geographic Information System are determined. According to diferent researching contents, corresponding technologies are applied. Proper schemes are developed for 5 key modules such as using VC++ to manage database, special mathemetical models, integration of VC++ and AO, scientific visualization analyst and programming combined with advanced computer languages.Coastalm zone is the interaction zone of lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere, and is the convergent and divergent zone of land and ocean interaction.Many countries have regarded the sustainable development of coastal zone as one of national key strategic aims.Based on the framework of technology on components geographic informationsystem software Arcobjects and object oriented programming tools Visual C++. Thispaper constructs the Changjiang River Estuary Marine Geographic Information System, analyses the general framework, data management and organization, main programming environment and key technology, especially in general framework and key technology.Based on the principle of software engineering and GIS system's flow, this paper chooses the components technology as system's technology system. Components technology has became the trend of modern GIS compactness and agility. The paper also analyses the system structure, classifies all Changjiang River Estuary's data into six kinds: basic gengraphic data, marine geology data, marine meteorology data, marine hydrology data, marine chemistry data and marine biology data and classifies all layers into three level layers:basic geographic layer, subject layer and integrated analysis layer.There are lots of inconvenience on Changjiang River Estuary data code and classification because of its inconsistence, coarse and unselected data. Based on the rule of international and national selected standards, this paper classifies and codes all Changjiang River Estuary data. With its own agility, the system's data code is also compatible to national standards.In the main programming environment, this paper dicusses the main interface with its menus and windows zones, then analyses the management to attribute data and spatial data, and database linking methods.In a word, this paper does some helpful and meaningful tries and has some creativity of analysis of estuary and coastal studies on modern GIS technology.
