The complexity of spatial data brings much difficulty to GIS development, data share and inter-operation. The Spatial Database Engine (SDE) makes it possible to solve these problems. The SDE shields the complexity of spatial data, so can make the GIS development much easier, the data and function share much effective.Based on the research of SDE, the paper design and realize the new SDE that is the Geospatial Database Engine (GSDE) for the geospatial database. The main contents and innovations are as follows:Firstly,introduce the concept of SDE; analyze the standards and contents of SDE; introduce and compare some typical products of SDE.Secondly,though analyzing the status and development of the spatial data model and introducing some typical spatial data models, designed the data model for the G_SDE which can store and manage the massive data efficiently; though analyzing the linear sortable quadtree and its poor expansibility, designed the spatial index for the G_SDE and analyzed its advantage; though analyzing the two storage models in relational database, designed the storage structure of the spatial data for the G_SDE; in order to enhanc the efficiency and security in transmitting the spatial data, designed the compression and the cache buffer strategy of the spatial data for the GSDE.Thirdly,carry on detail design for the G_SDE which included the function structure, the system structure, the data access object and the spatial data table structure.Fourthly,according to the design, the paper realized operating in different databases using the G_SDE by ADO; because of using ADO has poor efficiency in accessing Oracle, developed the OCI to improve it. Accomplished the experiment system of GSDE_Test for the GSDE.
