Along with continuous increase in the needs for geographic information, all countries in the world are making great efforts to develop National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI), constructing regionally or globally multi-scale geospatial data framework to meet the needs of all sorts of application. National Fundamental Geographic Information System is an important part of NSDI in which 1:10000 fundamental geographic information database plays an important role. Besides, 1:10000 fundamental geographic information database is the core and the foundation of the province-level fundamental geographic information system. The most important part of constructing spatial database of the province-level fundamental geographic information system is a great amount of geographic spatial data based on"4D" products(DEM, DOM, DRG, DLG).Because of the fundamental function and complicated characteristics of geographic spatial data, it is a stringent problem in the present data-centered times to store and manage them effectively so as to ensure their share,security and consistency.Because ArcSDE itself has such strong advantages as mass-data storage,multi-user parallel access,version management and long transaction processing ,it is becoming more and more popular to introduce ArcSDE into application system of GIS as an engine for storage and management of spatial data. As a spatial database engine, ArcSDE is the server's product in the ArcGIS series software and occupies a key position in the whole product framework . Making use of advanced data-storage and data-integrity means of relational database such as Oracle, DB2, SQL Server and Informix, ArcGIS can organize and manage organically the mass spatial data (including the vector data and the raster data), offering efficient multi-user parallel access to the spatial data through the advanced mechanism of the interior asynchronous buffering and spatial indexing. With the help of the large relational database in managing the spatial data, it is possible to make full use of the RDBMS's function of data management .integrate the spatial data with the non-spatial data and build a spatial database of real Client/ Server structure.The construction of the provincial-level spatial database has been an important research project in almost all the Provincial Geomatics Center nationalwide. This paper elaborates in full on the design and the realization of storing the "3D"(DEM, DOM, DLG) data products into large business relational database management system through the spatial database engine ArcSDE.
