With the arrival of the information age, network technology is also developing rapidly. Optical fiber communication technology has played a key role in the development of the information age. The optoelectronic devices are mainly realized by the variation of the optical signal of nonlinear material along with the change of electric signal, acoustic, magnetic. The improvement of nonlinear optical properties is the impetus for the development of optical fiber communication age. The main work of this paper is focus on the study of electro-optical properties of poled polymer and the application in fabricating electro-optical devices. This paper briefly introduced the development process, research situation, application of nonlinear optical polymer, and explained the essentiality to carry out this study. Besides, electro-optic (EO) effects of polymer material and electro-optic coefficient measurement method were studied. The fabrication of the polymer electro-optic modulator was carried out based on the following work.1. With the analysis and the specific experiments, it showed that the contact poling could effectively improve the uniformity of poling and improve the overall performance of devices. At present, the applications of poling are varied, the most frequently methods today are contact poling and Corona poling. This paper illustrated two poling with experiment and theory, and found that contact poling improved the overall performance of device for its merits. Corona poling due to a corona discharge poling, the electrode shape shortcomings will inevitably lead to poling of poor uniformity. Thus electrode of contact poling can be uniformly coverage to the various regional film, it avoided the defects of electrode structure. In this paper, organic /inorganic hybrid materials were poled with Corona and contact poling method. EO coefficients were tested on the same poled region where was just under the Corona poling electrode by reflectance method. And the EO coefficient difference of the two poling method could show the uniformity of poling. The experimental results showed that contact poling uniformity is better than corona poling method.2, It disposed the configuration of SU-8/DR1 cross-linked materials, and researched the links among exposure time, electro-optic coefficient, and refractive index. Inverted ridge waveguides were fabricated with SU-8/DR1 materials, and optical output of near-field profile was also obtained.Since SU-8 negative photo-resist is a macro-molecular structure of the symmetry, the cross-linked SU-8/DR1 electro-optic material was got by mixing chromospheres (DR1) molecular into it. SU-8/DR1 material film with stable electro-optical properties are processed by the UV exposure. By studying the absorption spectra, we could see that absorption is smaller at 1.3μm than at 1.55μm, which proved the availability of its application to EO devices. The electro-optic coefficient is 10 to 45 pm/V at 1310 nm measured by reflectance method. The relations of EO coefficient of SU-8/DR1 material with exposure time and refractive index were also researched. We also made a comparison of the three groups and found that the EO coefficient improved with the exposure time. When exposure time was 3 minutes, electro-optic coefficients was about 40 pm/V. Through the measurement of the refractive index of SU-8/DR1 film at different exposure time, we found that refractive index decreased with the improvement of exposure time.It effectively simplify the process, cut the cost and improve the device performances. Finally inverted ridge waveguide was fabricated with different sizes (4×5μm2,6×5μm2,12×5μm2)of the core waveguides respectively based on SU-8/DR1 material. Optical output of near-field profile was also obtained with 0.1 mW power input.3. EO coefficient calculation formula of reflect method was modified according to our polymer material and device structure. Electro-optic coefficients in the formula which are tested by Man and Teng, the Wu and Han, in the push to a formula, Teng and Man not only simplified too early, but calculated optical path difference considering incompletely. Although the formula of Wu and Han is more integral than Man and Teng, the way of calculating the optical path difference is the same.4,The excellence of the synthesized hybrid SiO2/DR1 material via sol-gel method is analyzed by both theory and experiment. With its excellent performance of both organic and inorganic material, the material exhibits wonderful stability and multiplicate selectivity. The EO coefficient of hybrid material has no obvious changes after 4 hours at room temperature, compared with that of doped-PMMA/DR1 material reducing to 25% of the initial value in the same condition. After 1000 hours at 80℃, it only relaxed 10%. The material also has a low absorption at 1310nm and 1550nm wavelengths. In this paper, electro-optical properties of organic / inorganic hybrid materials and the cross-linked material SU-8/DR1 and the application in fabricating electro-optical devices were studied. This work laid a solid foundation for high-quality polymer electro-optic modulators and switches.
