Reflecting And Transcending

At the end of 1960's and the beginning of 1970's, the modern western trend of anti-science which holds a criticized attitude towards science and technology appeared in western developed countries. The anti-science based on modern science moving towards post-modern science, originated from being against scientism in the modern society and criticized the negative effects from science and technology. Especially ,combining with post-modernism, it suspected the rationality, objectivity and truth of science, and denied the essence of science, caused a significant influence on the developed countries. With the policy of opening to the outside world deepening, China, as a developing country, has been concerning the trend in question since 1990's. The academic circle in China launched a heated discussions on "How the Developing Countries Confront the Western Trend of Anti-science," which makes two completely different attitudes and becomes a noticeable social spiritual phenomenon in the present Chinese modernization process. This paper tries to analyze this phenomenon in the perspective of philosophy science and technology.Firstly, the paper gives a brief of the Modern Western Trend of Anti-science in order to form a basic knowledge of it. Secondly, from the different interpretations of the trend in question (anti-science or reflecting on science), the article describes how and why Chinese scholars response to it. Thirdly, basing on the dilemma of developing science and technology in developing country, the different understanding of post-modern -turning of modern science, the active spiritural pursuit of all Chinese contemporary intellectuals and the conflicting amid different scientific standpoints,etc, the writer reflects thoroughly over the reasons and essence of this social spiritual phenomenon which resulting in two opposition responses to the western anti-science in China. Finally, the thesis regards the dispute mentioned above as the beneficial enlightenment for China to make a strategic choice of its development science and technology. Namely ,We should transcend the bewilderments and problems resulting from the growing up of science and technology in the western world, and develop our country's science and technology quickly and well.
