In the 1960s, new particles were continuously discovered in the laboratory, because at that time the accelerator, established in the University of California at Berkeley, was able to detect the strong interaction. But the theory had been known was not used to describe the strong interaction. So the study of strong interaction became of a fashion of particle physics in the 1960s.This paper studies the contribution of David J. Gross to the discovery of asymptotic freedom and the formation of the theory of strong interaction, who is one of the key persons in the fashion and the winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics 2004. Nobel Prize in large measure represents a milestone in scientific progress, it is also one of the criteria to measure one's contribution to the scientific.Gross is a famous particle physicist and is well-known by the discovery of Asymptotic Freedom in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The discovery of asymptotic freedom makes the problem one of the four basic interactions in nature—the strong interaction be resolved smoothly. And it is significant for us to understand the strong interaction, which binds the smallest of the material—Quark together. In addition, he also makes important contributions to heterotic string theory and the unified theory. His work holds an important position in the contemporary history of particle physics. In this paper, document law, statistic analysis law and history analysis law were applied. And the experiences, the research results were studied. Then from the perspective of the history of science, the true process that how Gross had started to study asymptotic freedom and his important work in the establishment of the theory of strong interaction were systematically studied. The end of this paper was the simple comments on D. J. Gross. He was not only a prolific theoretical physicist, but also a successful educator.
