Extenics was put forward by professor Cai Wen in 1983, it is a theoretical and methodological science of researching and dealing with incompatible problem, which is the transverse science throughout the natural science and social science. Specially, it is the laws and methods from the perspective of qualitative and quantitative study on the two issues to resolve contradictions by using formal tools.Detecting technology is a means to analyze matter quantitatively, which can help people to recognize and research on objective world. The basic role of detecting is to obtain the useful information, so detecting technology is in the field of information science, it is one of the three supports of information technology. Correspondingly, the new technology combining the extenics with detecting technology is extension detecting technology, it uses the theoretical method of contradiction and the sensor technology to make the undetectable problem detectable. It creates a new route to the development of extension detecting technology, universality and scientific are characteristics of extension detecting technology, it is still at the primary stage for now.This paper mainly introduced the basic concepts of extenics and extension detecting, presented the research route of extension detecting. Because of the shortcomings with knowledge maintaining, complex modeling, and mass calculating existed in traditional fault identitification method, it restrained the process of fault idetification to some extent. Therefore, put forward a method for machine fault identification based on the extension theory , this method make evaluate index as the matter-element, and then give birth to the classical field and the controlled field, and obtained the weight coefficient through the PCA(principal component analysis) algorithm. Eventually, by means of dependent function can calculate the dependent degree of unknown object with each fault pattern, then fault pattern is judged with the calculated dependent degree. In order to confirm the accuracy of extension identification, do some research on conditions of some type internal combustion engine plunger.
