In last decades, according to many seismic damage investigations of destructive earthquakes different site categories can result in different seismic damage even though under the same conditions. Moreover, with sufficient strong motion data and comparative analysis of these data, the influence of site conditions on ground motions has been confirmed and become an important topic. However, the current site classification is only available to urban areas and important projects. To expand site classification to more areas, e.g., throughout the country, it is necessary to explore new methods for site classification. In this thesis a method for site classification based on site genesis is presented. In this method the geological data of 1:500000 and 1:200000 scales have been colleted. Then, integration, management and spatial analysis of the geological information and data are processed by GIS. Eventually, the relationship between site classification and site genesis and the correlation matrix of site classification are established. Besides, another method of the site classification based on topographic slope is also proposed herein, which describe a technique to obtain site classification maps directly from topographic data. By slope analysis of the topographic data the relationship matrix between slope and site classification can be derived and a new method based on topographic slope can be developed. In this thesis, by the secondary development of GIS two program modules of site classification, methods of national site classification and a Chinese site classification diagram are achieved. To obtain more reliable results, a large number of borehole data are collected to verify and complement the results of site classification. After detailed discussion of the new methods for site classification, two applications of regional site classification map in earthquake engineering are introduced, which include studies on earthquake scenario and seismic zonation in Guangdong province based on site conditions. The results show that the impact to the earthquake is clear with taking into account site conditions or not, and the methods of Site conditions are more reasonable in theory. At the same time, the feasibility and the reliability of the methods proposed herein are verified with a certain practical value and a bright future. Finally, the whole information system is integrated, in the Web browser Internet users can browse and share the information.
