Finite element mesh generation is an interdisciplinary research domain of computational mechanics and computational geometry,and surface mesh generation is an important branch. In the process of complex surface mesh generation,some triangular elements with poor quality and/or topological defects will be generated.These elements must be cleaned up or optimized.In RE(reverse engineering) research domain,the surface mesh model is too large, and it needs to be simplified.There are a number of pathological elements in complicated 3D surface mesh which generated by automatic meshers.In this paper,the pathological elements are classified,and some algorithms are proposed to clean up several types of incorrect topology triangle elements on surface mesh.This paper introduced the mesh optimization algorithms and surface simplification algorithm using quadric error metrics.The method to transform triangular mesh into quadrilateral mesh is studied,and a searching and locating algorithm in a mixed triangular and quadrilateral mesh is proposed so as to deal with the isolated triangles caused by the transforming process.Some examples illustrate the validity of the algorithms.This paper analyzes the Open CASCADE libraries and the basic working principle of OCAF(Open CASCADE Application Framework),then a single document application framework based on OCAF is designed for surface mesh generation.Based on this application framework,the functions of importing and displaying a geometric model is realized,and self-developed surface mesh generation library is integrated.The control of mesh size is achieved by using OCAF dynamic selection technique.The basic visualization function for mesh data is realized.
