Vulnerability assessment is an important element in risk assessment. In geo-hazards risk assessment, vulnerability assessment through analysising the physical conditions of the affected objects. The main task in vulnerability assessment of geo-hazards is to analyze the affected area for the spatial distribution of socio-economic factors and the level of capacity for hazards preparedness. Vulnerability assessment of geo-hazards plays a decisive role in the integrity Construction of entire assessment system and the scientific, clarity, uniformity expression of the assessment results.Southwest mountainous towns as the center of local economic, political and cultural play a crucial role in the local economic development. However, the many of southwest mountain towns located in the mountainous valley zones and their terrains are stenosis and their geological conditions are complex. There are more and the concentration rainfall and geo-hazards such as collapse, landslide, debris flow hazards occur frequently. Therefore, establishing a set of vulnerability assessment methods of the geo-hazards in the southwest mountainous towns for application has the very important practical significance. It can provide a strong scientific and technological support for risk assessment and management of geo-hazards, the rational development of mountainous resources and the sustainable economic and social development.This paper based on the China Geological Survey research project in 2008—" Method and demonstration of risk management of geo-hazards for Southwest mountainous towns construction ", with the typical and representative selection of Danba county town in Sichuan Province as a demonstration area ( Danba County town typical model village and its surrounding areas), and conduct in-depth and systematic research on the vulnerability assessment of geo-hazards in southwest mountainous towns.(1) First of all, in this paper, a great deal of research on vulnerability assessment of domestic and foreign research results has been done, and the suitability assessment of the existing methods of vulnerability assessment of geo-hazards geo-hazards is also has been done. It lays a foundation for studying on Vulnerability Assessment of geo-hazards in southwest mountainous towns.(2) According to the main task of vulnerability assessment of geo-hazards, this paper combines with the example of the demonstration area in Danba and put forward the investigation method of affected objects of geo-hazards in southwest mountainous towns.(3) Based on the sufficient study on the traditional index system of vulnerability assessment, with the case of demonstration area in Danba county town, index system of vulnerability assessment of geo-hazards in large scale and in medium scale were studied. This paper has made index system of vulnerability assessment of geo-hazards in different scales.(4) According to characteristics of southwest mountainous towns , with the case of demonstration area in Danba county town, this paper established evaluation models of vulnerability assessment of geo-hazards in large scale and in medium scale and the method of assessing vulnerability based on the ILWIS software.(5) This paper got draw maps and some related results by application of vulnerability assessment models and methods of geo-hazards in southwest mountainous towns and verified through the example of demonstration area in Danba county town.The results show that method system of vulnerability assessment of geo-hazards in southwest mountainous towns which is including the investigation method of affected objects of geo-hazards, index system of vulnerability assessment and evaluation models of vulnerability assessment is feasible and practical. This method system can be widely used in vulnerability assessment of geo-hazards in southwest mountainous towns and provide a scientific basis for risk assessment of geo-hazards.
