Southwest mountainous area is one of the severest areas in geological hazard throughout China, where their geological conditions are complex and rockfall, landslide, debris flow hazards occur frequently. In recent years, southwest mountainous towns construction developed rapidly with the rapid developing of industrialization and urbanization, lots of human activity on geological environment, inducing a strong disturbance of geological hazards caused serious damage, the geological disaster has become an important factor in mountain towns development. Therefore, the mountainous southwest town construction need geological hazard risk assessment from the Angle of cost and benefit to realize scientific decision-making and effective control, reasonable avoid geological disasters. For a long time ,people is more devoted to geological hazard risk assessment, but vulnerability assessment as an important part for risk assessment involve rarely. According to herein above, establish a system of vulnerability assessment methods which is suitable for the geo-hazards in the southwest mountainous towns and aims to provide a powerful technical support of the geological disaster risk control and mountain town construction and resource development has the very important practical significance.Based on the analysis of the materials, this paper summarized the vulnerability assessment, analyses the current definition of vulnerability, and lay the foundation for the vulnerability assessment. Evaluate the vulnerability describes the main contents, type and methods of common vulnerability assessment, discusses the vulnerability of geological hazard in the evaluation index system of selecting principle, process and method. Combined with the characteristics of mountainous southwest, region is divided into three kinds of population, resources and assets, and the index values and standardized treatment were studied; analytic hierarchy process (ahp) was selected as a geological hazard vulnerability assessment method of weighting values. Choose Spatial Multi - Evaluation (SMCE) as the evaluation method, its principle is easy and clear. This paper establish a system of vulnerability assessment methods which is suitable for the geo-hazards in the southwest mountainous towns combined with the 2008 Danba typical demonstration research which includes material to investigate and collect and interior finishing methods, index system and the method of weighting values, evaluation model and analysis of the results. Use data of Wenchuan demonstration to evaluate the vulnerability system of technology and validated with examples of evaluation technology research and further perfect system.The results show that method system of vulnerability assessment of geo-hazards in southwest mountainous towns has theoretical significance and practical value, This method system can be used in vulnerability assessment of geo-hazards in southwest mountainous towns and provide a basis for the planning of mountainous southwest of urban construction and risk control.
