Tidal simulation, in the hydraulic model experiments, always plays an important role in natural phenomena study, natural disasters prevention, and the engineering facilities choosing, etc. Based on the two-way flume for storm surges study, in the Key Laboratory for Coastal Disaster and Defense of Ministry of Education in Hohai University, a tidal simulating and predicting method is implemented in the paper, processing the data get from the harmonic analysis method on the two-way flume control system for tidal prediction study.Firstly, the paper introduces the development of the physical model test and the methods for tidal analysis and prediction briefly, and studies two basic methods for tidal simulating, tidal harmonic analysis and adaptive control. About the former method, choosing tidal constituents, implementing the least squares method in the computer and calculating the variables, and the analysis criteria are explained in detail; about the latter one, mainly focus on introducing the model building and parameters estimation strategies. On this basis, the hardware structure of the control system, a distributed control system, is described. The two-way flume, as the controlled object, can generate tides by overflow from the tailgate. PC, the controlling machine, monitors the whole system and the PAC and the remote I/O modules deal with the data on-site and the commands from programs.Kingview, the main software platform, monitors and configures the whole control system. MATLAB implements the harmonic analysis program, and the tidal prediction curve can be calculated and transferred to the Kingview synchronously, according to the DDE protocol. Data processing program for the PAC and remote I/O modules transfers the data to the Kingview after acquisition. And then, through the PID control algorithm in Kingview, the tailgate adjusts the water level and can generate the simulated tidal prediction in the flume.Finally, the tidal simulation method above was adopted on the two-way flume for storm surges, and the experimental results are in accordance with the theoretical expectations. In the end, the shortages and suggestion for further improvement are given for the relevant technical staff to reference.
