Building seismic damage is the main basis to evaluate seismic intensity. The evaluation object in the Chinese Seismic Intensity Scale (1999) is merely the buildings which do not processed by seismic design, or not-reinforced masonry buildings. With the development of our country's economic, the buildings in urban-rural have been changed a lot, and the number of buildings processed by seismic design increases gradually, meanwhile, a large scale of old civil buildings still exist. These are factors should be considered in the evaluation of seismic intensity. Therefore, the Chinese Seismic Intensity Scale (2008) is more practical applications since the evaluation object is categorized into three classes. The research on seismic intensity is based on building seismic damage in this paper. After summarization about previous practical experiences and data, reference about the European Macroseismic Scale (EMS-98) and the Chinese Seismic Intensity Scale GB/T 17742-2008, buildings which to evaluate seismic intensity are classified into five classes in China. Each class is researched and provides reference for seismic evaluation.In this paper the main research contents as following:(1) A large amount of materials which also including the investigations in earthquake site conducted by research group about building seismic damage is collected in this paper. After intensive study about these materials, buildings which to evaluate seismic intensity are classified into five classes, and this provides reference for intensity standard future revision.(2) Each evaluation index is acquired after statistic analysis. Through verification about evaluation index of the same class buildings in the Chinese Seismic Intensity Scale GB/T 17742-2008, the result shows that the majority of evaluation index agrees on statistic results, and only specific individual need to be mended in order to correspond to the statistic results well.(3) Mean damage index of each different buildings is proposed according to calculation about the materials in appendix, so mean damage index of class A and class B is distinguished in the Chinese Seismic Intensity Scale GB/T 17742-2008, and mean damage indexes of timber frame buildings and reinforced concrete buildings are added.(4) Synthesized damage index method is advanced in this paper. This method is to select the most general buildings in earthquake site as the calculation standard, then translate mean damage index of each other different buildings into index of the standard buildings, and then average the index by the numbers or areas of buildings, finally get the synthesized damage index which is used to evaluate the seismic intensity in this area.
