The air traffic control system is such system that can supervise planes taking off, landing and navigation to ensure flight order and safety. The main task is to improve the utilization of flight space though preventing aircraft collision and ensuring aircraft to fly orderly. Modern air traffic control system has been developed to semi-automatic system which combined by radar, communication and computer. Especially, combined application based on geographic information system and global positioning technology will gradually enter the field of air transport.This article discusses the GIS technology used in the air traffic control system we have been developing. The main research I did are in the following aspects: Based on the GIS-oriented spatial database model, I research how to design and implement the application interface of spatial database engine, application interface is responsible for the organization and management of spatial data, and expose interfaces to upper application, which can directly operate maps, layers, features and etc. we do a simple research and analysis on spatial database, and design project-related layer structure of the table. In the spatial analysis module, we have implemented Bessel algorithm for solution of geodetic problem, which can be used in flight control for distance measuring and calculation, flight position prediction and the accuracy of flight location. In the display module, we have implemented spatial elements outputting to display device. Since the geometric properties of spatial elements is the geodetic coordinates, so it needs coordinate transformation, which includes different coordinate system transformation, Gaussian ellipsoid coordinate to plane coordinate projection, Gauss plane coordinates to the electronic map coordinate transformation. In the editing module of spatial element, based on relatively small quantity of features in each layer, we used an efficient feature picking algorithm based on the reverse testing pixel RGB value. Through the experimental data analysis, the accuracy of the critical algorithm in each module has been verified to meet the application requirements.
