With the populiazation of computers and the development of geomatics science, high resolution optical satellite imaging systems are widely used in fields of remote sensing and aerphotogrammery. These imaging systems can provide not only panchromatic and multispectral images, but also sterograms with stereoscopic vision. Satellite images are mainly source of surveying and mapping through which up to date geographic information can be obtained raply and new map products can be made. Obtaining large scale fundmental geographic information from high resolution satellite images is urgent and with huge requirements, which influence the wide use of Surveying and mapping for national economy development and serving the improving of peoples standard of living, espcically in the construction of vigorously developed digital region, digital China and digital Earth. This thesis introduces the features and technique parameters of frequently used satellites simply, analyses the difference of mapping methods between areophtogrammetry and satellite images with stereoscopic vision, discusses the 1: 50,000 topographic maps updating methods based on satellite orthographic maps or satellite stereoscopic images using ditial phtogrammetry systems, and at last results in the disciplines of different resolution satellite images used in middium and small scale maps production.
