As a kind of typical mechatronic product, CNC machine tools are the dominant equipments of the modern manufacturing. As CNC technology progresses rapidly, CNC machine tools are used all over the world. Since 2003, China has been the world's largest consumer of machine tools. As CNC machine tools become widely used, failures occur more and more frequently. It costs the manufacturer a lot of manpower and material resources to maintain the equipments. Even worse, serious accidents may happen and induce great economic loss.At present, researches on diagnosis of CNC machine tools in China are mainly fasten on process control system, remote diagnosis and fault prediction system. The process control system and remote diagnosis both infer failures indirectly by monitoring the process of cutting, while the fault prediction system predicts the field failures by monitoring the running of machine parts and hydraulic system.To meet the requirements of application of a CNC machine tools manufacturer, this paper introduces a remote warning and diagnosis system for CNC machine tools. The system is comprised of three major parts: data collection and communication module, warning and diagnosis center and information service. It transfers the scattered running data to the master, and then the master will pre‐analyze the data. If the data is in the normal range, it will not be processed. Otherwise, it will be transferred to the warning and diagnosis center by the master through GPRS network. The center uses fault tree analysis to analyze the data, in order to acquire the fault warning and diagnosis information, which can be sent to the maintenance staff automatically by SMS. The system greatly raises the CNC machine tools fault warning efficiency and reduces the frequency of the failure of the equipment, both of which help to prevent serious accidents from happening and improve the remote service and maintenance. Not only for CNC machine tools, can the system also be used in the designing of the remote monitoring system for other large‐scale mechatronic products such as central air conditioning and elevator.
