Diethyl malonate(DEM) is an important fine chemical materials, which is widely used in pharmaceutical, polyester, perfume and dyestuff industries. The synthesis process of DEM has been reviewed that nowadays in our country, DEM is mainly produced by sodium cyanide traditionally. This method has a long technological process and a low yield; especially sodium cyanide, highly toxic, which is used in the process, can lead to environmental pollution and the separation and post treatment are complicated. Additionally, Carbonylation method is expensive and difficult to handle. And other methods have their own disadvantages which make the industrial production impossible. As the development of environmentally friendly technology and the pharmaceutical industry, a green synthesis is needed to study. Diethyl carbonate (DEC) as a green reagent which is safe can be used in the production of DEM by Claisen condensation.In this paper, many effect factors such as catalyst, solvent, solvent quantity, feed ratio and reaction temperature on the conversion rate, selectivity and yield of DEM were investigated. Finally a suitable process condition was confirmed.
