Aspen Plus has been used to simulate the ammonia synthesis process for producing ammonia. The thermodynamic properties used in the simulation have been calculated and checked and models of units have been established. After that, Aspen Plus has been used to calculate the equilibrium composition of the ammonia synthesis system and appropriate kinetic models has been established to calculate Braun ammonia synthesis reactor and Topsoe ammonia synthesis reactor. The results of simulation were fairly in agreement with the data of engineering. In addition, the main operating parameters of the ammonia synthesis reactor were optimized based on sensitivity analysis. Efficiency of change in operating conditions on the synthesis process was discussed through aspects of synthetic pressure, converter inlet temperature, space velocity, hydrogen-nitrogen ratio, inert gas content. The optimal operation parameters were obtained.On the basis of above work, Braun ammonia synthesis process under 15 MPa and Tospoe ammonia synthesis process under 15 MPa have been established. Then the converter inlet temperature of Braun ammonia synthesis process was optimized and led to a 3.5% higher output. Afterwards, the Braun ammonia synthesis process under 10MPa has been established. The results showed that Fe catalyst had 20.21% lower activity under low pressure. So it is necessary to study Ru catalyst which has higher activity under low pressure. The appropriate operation parameters for Ru catalyst were researched and the optimal operation parameters were obtained. On the basis of that, the siding process system of Ru catalyst was established. In the same operation conditions, the optimal temperature for Ru catalyst was 20~30℃lower than Fe catalyst and the relative activity of Ru catalyst was 40.8% higer than Fe catalyst.The results obviously showed the advantages of Ru catalyst.
