In recent years, it is common to find bamboo shoot shell abandoned on the roadside in rural area, which not only wastes the valuable biological resource, but also pollutes the environment. The development of bamboo shoot shell fiber helps to solve the problem of growing demand for plant fiber material, while at the same time protects the forest resource. To create a new path for the rational use of bamboo resource as well as a new area for the development of textile fiber, research on bamboo shoot shell fiber fabric is of great significance.This dissertation focuses mainly on the R&D of bamboo shoot shell. First of all, we shall have a basic knowledge of bamboo shell from its size, weight, moisture regain and other aspects. And then we test its chemical composition by the GB5889-86"Ramie Fiber Chemical Composition Quantitative Analysis Method". The test result showed that bamboo shoot shell fiber is made up of 41.66% cellulose, slightly lower than Ramie fiber, 28.12% hemicelluloses as well as 20.34% lignin, higher than Ramie fiber.The chemical degumming process for bamboo shoot shell should be"sample preparation–acid steeping– wash–first alkali liquor degumming– washing– second alkali liquor degumming– washing– bleaching– washing– looseing– dewatering– oiling– drying". After the entire test, we drew curves reflecting that length, fineness, strength and residual gum rate of bamboo shell changed over time as well as changed with different level of NaOH concentration. By carrying up the orthogonal test of three factors and three levels, we obtained the optimal art parameters for the second boiling of fiber strength with NaOH concentration to be 8g/L, H2O2 to be 4% and second boiling lasting 60min.Fundamental properties such as length, fineness, moisture regain, rupture strength, breaking elongation and initial modulus of the bamboo shell fiber were tested which showed that the average length of bamboo shell fiber was 64mm, fineness 5.9 tex, moisture regain 10.7%, rupture strength 2.83cN/dtex, breaking elongation 1.82% and initial modulus 198cN/dtex. Picture of bamboo shell by the scanning electronic microscope (SEM) indicated that each fasciculus contained 20-30 single-fibers which stuck together by pectin. A number of shallow grooves were found on the surface of single fiber with its cross-sector to be oval-shaped and edge to be irregular. Such surface structure gives bamboo shell fiber a certain degree of cohesive force which means spinnability. Infrared spectrogram as well as X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis demonstrated that the characteristic group of bamboo sheet shell fiber is similar to that of cellulose fiber with crystallinity to be 68%.Blending bamboo shoot shell fiber and cotton together with 70% of cotton fiber and 30% of bamboo shoot shell fiber, we obtained new yarn whose fineness was 44.33tex, strength 394.8cN, and breaking elongation 7.04%. Based on fabrics made by small prototype using these yarns, we may discuss its style and application field further.Through this research, we believe that fiber obtained by bamboo shoot shell degumming meets the demand of spinning concerning both its strength and length. It is promising that bamboo shoot shell fiber should be a new kind of spinning material after further research and development, which enjoys significant social and economic benefits.
