The arc spray is one kind of the practical thermal spray technology with good economic results. The study on supersonic velocity arc spray (or so-called High Velocity Arc Spray) is presently an important direction in the field of arc spray research. According to aerodynamic theory, high-pressured air will be accelerated over sonic when passing through a specially-designed tube, then used to atomize melt matal drops into particles. These particles are accelerated in the same time and sprayed on the surface of workpiece, then a layer of compadt coating formed. In this dissertation, the principles and methods of designing and manufacturing supersonic arc spray gun are discussed, and the tests on properties of proto- spraygun have been done. The content of studying on supersonic arc spray gun consists of several aspects, namely, the design of tube of supersonic arc gun, the atomization research, the velocity measurement of airstream and flight particles, and tests on properties of spray coating. The results show that supersonic arc gun is of the higher adhesive strength and the larger hardness when compared with common arc spray gun.
