The mechanical properties and interfacial interaction of polyamide 6 filled with CaCO3 modified by coupling agents and acrylaniide (AAM) surface polymerization through ultraviolet (UV) irradiation were studied by ESCA, DSC, SEM, particle size and mechanical properties tests.1.After treated with coupling agent, CaCO3 filled PA6 can achieve high stiffness and high toughness. Titanate coupling agent (NDZ-201) is more effective for improvement of mechanical properties of PA6/CaCO3 than silane coupling agent (KH-5 50) and oxazoline (ON-3 30). After treated by NDZ-201 coupling agent, CaCO3 filled PA6 (PA6ICaCO3: 84/16) gets tensile strength of 64.5MPa, elongation at break of 40%, flexural strength of 81 .4MPa and impact strength of 9.64kJ1m2.2.By means of UV irradiation, AAM monomer can be effectively polymerized on CaCO3 particle surface and forms a PAAM layer. This layer tightly wraps the CaCO3 particle and cannot be washed out by acetone. An obvious Ni s peak is observed on the ESCA spectra of treated CaCO3 particle, however no Nls peak appears on the spectra of original CaCO3 particle. The mechanical properties, especially the impact strength, of the treated CaCO3 filled PA6 are enhanced a lot as compared with those of untreated CaCO3 filled PA6. When the content of PAAM in the treated CaCO3 is 1.5%, the impact strength reached a maximum, 11 .5kJ/m2. DSC result shows that the interfacial interaction between CaCO3 particle and PA6 matrix is greatly improved when CaCO3 particle is treated with AAM surface polymerization under UV light, the glass transition temperature of PA6 matrix shifts to high temperature side, its crystal structure and melting behavior are changed.
