Amino acids constitute a particularly important class of difunctional compounds because they are the basic building blocks from which proteins or enzymes are constructed. Since there are two kinds of functional groups in amino acids, they can coordinate via the carboxylate and/or amino groups. Meanwhile, many transitional metal complexes are of interest because of their relevance as active site of biomolecules such as proteins and enzymes. So, it is very important to study on the amino acid complexes. A series of studies by using X-ray monocrystal analysis as the main methods on rare earth complexes with p-amino acids, heteronuclear complexes with a-amino acids and some complexes with different ligands were reported in this paper. We have synthesized eleven kinds of new complexes with amino acids and most of them were studied carefully. The syntheses and structures of the complexes: [Gd2([}-Ala)6 (H20)4](C104)6-H20, [Er2(p-Ala)6(H20)4](C104)6-H20, [CuEr(Gly)5(H20)2](C104)5-H20) [Cu2Gd2(Gly)io(H20)4](C104),o-4H20,[NaCu(gly)2C104]n, Na[NaCu6(Gly)8(H2O)2](ClO4)6-H2O,Na2[Na2Cu,2(Gly)16(H20)4](C104)i2-H20, [Cu(Gly) (SCN) (H2O)]n and [Nd(Gly)3(H2O)Fe(CN)6'H2O]n were discussed in this paper and we have got the following conclusions:(l) amino acids can coordinate to the Cu( II) and RE(III) at the same time and lead to the heteronuclear complexes.(2) there are two very similar chains coexist in the p-alanine-lanthanide complexes and their structures are affected by the pH very slightly.5(S) the alkali metal ions , which can act as both counter ions and structural units in the synthesis of multi-nuclear clusters and/or multi-dimensional structures with useful properties, may lead to many interesting structures in the copper( II )-amino acid systems at different conditions.(4) amino acid can be used as a second ligand to synthesis some kinds of polymer with CN or SCN and it is useful to find some new complexes with interesting magnetic properties.
