In this paper, the history, basic process and characteristic of the sol-gel theory and technology are first introduced in brief. Then it presents the newly research progresses and the applications of the sol-gel method in preparing bulk, fiber, coatings and films, powder and complex materials. Then the kind of SiO2-ZrO2 gel bulk glass-ceramic is prepared by using sol-gel method and the Water-Exchanging method. The kind of Nd-doped SiO2-Al2O3 gel bulk glass-ceramic is prepared by using the two-step hydrolization method. After dried at 70 and 100, the dried gels are transparent without cracks, then calcined respectively. By using DTA,IR and XRD analysis, the result show that : In the gel glass of these two system, the phase change of the zirconia and the alumina are restricted because of the high content of silica which leads to the stabilization of the prepared materials. And the applications of these two materials is introduced briefly. By using absorption spetrum and fluorescence spetra analysis, the result show that : In the gel glass of the Nd-doped SiO2-Al2O3 gel bulk glass-ceramic, the strongest emmision is at about 1.06u m, the clustering of Nd3+ ion is controlled by the addition of alumina which creates the "cage effect" to Nd3+ion.
