This thesis systematically summarized the recent researches and developments of flocculants. Based on the investigation of the global water resources and the development of water-treatment agent, we compared the researches between the domestic and the abroad. Since the desired water-treatment agent is required to be inexpensive, innocuous and biodegradable. Therefore, the corn-core, the by-product of agriculturally high yield product in our country, was considered to be a good candidate raw material because it is consisted of natural macromolecules. This study gives the concept to use it in environmental protection after chemical modification. Furthermore, the synthetic experiments were practiced, and the efficiency of the product was evaluated as well.Normally, flocculants were classified as the inorganic, the organic and the multiplex. And the mechanism of the flocculation was investigated morphologically and dynamically. In this thesis, several flocculants made from the natural corn-core powder (CC) were introduced. It was the first time to use different anionic and cationic reagents (OTMAA, FTMAB, FABC etc.} modify the semi-nano-micro-particles. To check the structural change of CC, molecular structures of every new flocculants were investigated using Infrared absorption spectrum (IR), which showed that a new chemical bond different from the raw materials was formed. Through a series of experiments and comparisons, including the flocculent effect examined by applying it to treat muddy kaolin solution, it was proved that the cation-modified CC is better than that of the anion-modified. Different cation-modified CC also showed variable effects. For example, the flocculant C-OTMAA was prior to others (C-FTMAB and C-FABC). The transparency of muddy solution treated by C-OTMAA could be raised from 67% up to 98% or 99% in 10 min. By using this flocculant, further experiment tells that it could be also used to treat turbid water of either diatomite or clay.Although the primary study requires further improved detail examination not onlyin synthetic techniques but also in theoretical investigations, the interesting phenomena seem very instructive for researchers to pay attention to it. There must be a wide field for its future application.
