This paper mainly studied the fundamental characteristics of Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR) and discussed the disciplinarian of degradation. We also discussed the immobilization technique and its factors in the ABR. We get the following results:1. When the starting loading rate is 0.85kg COD/(m3 ?d), HRT=24h and the temperature is about 35℃, after sixty days' domestication and cultivation, the COD removal rate of ABR is steadily at 80~90% and the pH value of the effluent is about 7.00, the ABR can start-up very well. And in the first two sectors of the ABR, the sludge is grey, rod or globular granular sludge; and in the last two sectors of the ABR, the sludge is black, smooth globular granular sludge.2. Due to the low loading rate, the first two sectors have enough food and this benefit for microbiology to enhance their activity, and the last two sectors have not enough food and this is harmful for sludge to enhance their activity. So the COD is mainly degraded in the first two sectors and the COD removal rate is about 40~6%.3. When we take the HRT as a constant, we gradually enhance the influent concentration in order to increase the loading rate. When the loading rate is from 1.0 kg COD/(m3 ?d) to 4.0 kg COD/(m3 ?d), it has no effect on the treatment efficiency of ABR when the influent concentration is lower than 4000 mg/L; While the influent concentration is higher than 4000 mg/L, the treatment effect is deteriorated.4. At the condition of starting loading rate is 0.85 kg COD/ (m3 ?d), HRT=24h and the temperature is about 35℃, the cultivation and development of granular sludge is related to inorganic particulate matter and filamentous bacterium. And the interaction between microbiology and inorganic particulate matter format the frames of the granular sludge.5. The sludge that make dairy as food are larger and have higher activity than those that make starch as food. At the condition of low loading rate, the distraction of the active sludge in the starch wastewater is mainly at the bottom and the top of the reactor. While in the dairy wastewater, is mainly at the bottom and gradually decreased with influent flowing.
