First, the serious hazards induced by mine spontaneous fire and necessity to be prevented and controlled are pointed. Then the process of coal spontaneous fire and theory of spontaneous combustion are discussed, various inside and outside factors which influence the coal spontaneous combustion ,viz.coal spontaneous combustion tendency, geological deposit conditions of coal seam, conditions of development and mining and condition of ventilation are stressly analysed, nonlinear nature of coal spontaneous combustion is presented. Then the theory basis of catastrophe theory and its process and significance of accurrence and development are stated: and basic theory, geometric property and typical characters of several elementary catastrophe are particularly introduced using catastrophe theory which is a branch theory of nonlinear science; and the nonlinear mechanism of accurrence and development of mine spontaneous fire is analysed emphatically using the theory of cusp catastrophe,and the catastrophe model of mine spontaneous fire is established, and the spontaneous combustion process of Ximing coal mine, Xishan Coal&Electricity Group, is analysed using the model. At last, the important conclusions about preventing and controlling mine spontaneous fire are deduced, which is to promote the safety production of coal mine in our country and to eliminate or lower the serious hazards induced by mine spontaneous fire.
