Whether a feeding system is reasonable or not directly affects the quality of strip products for twin roll strip caster. Level fluctuations, fluid mixed characteristics and the patterns of flow fluid are the crucial factors evaluated the feeding system. In this paper, a numerical and physical simulation was performed for the feeding system in the molten pool. According to the principle of similarity theory, a dynamic physical 1:1 model was established. By using an ultrasonic level detector and conductometer respectively, the level fluctuations and fluid mixed characteristics in the pool were measured under the conditions of different nozzle sizes and operation parameters. The patterns of flow fluid in the pool were measured with Laser Doppler Anemometer. The flowing tendency in the pool obtained from numerical simulation was similar to that obtained from the measured results. The results of numerical simulation are a very close approximation to the measured in the upper portion of the pool with the bifurcation nozzles. Consequently, the established mathematical model can use to analyze the patterns of flow fluid in the pool preferably. Though analyzing the results of numerical and physical simulations, the effects of nozzle sizes and operation parameters on level fluctuations, fluid mixed characteristics and the patterns of flow fluid in the pool were studied systematically. On the basis of the study, it was obtained that the quantitative relationship between level fluctuations, fluid mixed characteristics in the pool and the nozzle sizes, operation parameters. The results not only can apply to estimate whether the current nozzle meets the expectations of the feeding system in the pool of twin roll strip caster, but also can provide a basis for designing new nozzles.
