By means of sorption test , scanning electron microscope observation , mercury porosimeter and nitrogen adsorption (BET) measuring, the oil sorption behaviour (diesel oil and heavy oil) of porous carbon materials, such as exfoliated graphite (EG) and plant-charcoal, is studied. Also the influence factors affecting oil adsorption efficiency and the sorption mechanism are discussed as well. The diesel oil and heavy oil sorption test show that: worm-like EG samples behave more significant high specific sorption than those of particle-like ones for diesel oil, however, the specific sorption of particle-like ones are not sensitive to the changes of specific surface. On the other hand, the specific sorption for worm-like EG is easily influenced by packed density during heavy oil sorption process comparing to those particle-like ones. Furthermore, the sorption process is also influenced by the packed height of EG samples and the properties liquid etc.Comparing with the worm-like EG samples, the specific sorption on diesel oil is significantly low for plant-charcoals, but it is equivalent to that of particle-like EG ones. Besides, the oil specificsorption is comparatively high for carbonized corn-stalks and carbonized cole-stalks than that of carbonized bamboo.By means of SEM observation mercury porosimeter measuring, it is indicates that worm-like EG samples have network-like porous structures. Owing to a majority of macropores and mesopores inside and on their suface, they are suitable for sorbing oil substances with large molecules size, for example, diesel oil and heavy oil. The particle-like EG and plant-charcoal have so flat suface that they are very difficult for oil molecules to diffuse over. Furthermore, due to the pore amount and pore volume of macropores are less than that of worm-like EG samples, they all have low oil specific sorption. Finally, the adsorption mechanism of worm-like EG was discussed based on thermodynamics and surface chemistry. We guess that EG samples have the tendency of adsorbing other molecules or atoms voluntary in order to decrease their own suface energy. Besides, attaching many active function groups onto suface similar to oil molecules, they have strong selective adsorption ability.
