The application and studies of atom trapping flame atomic absorption spectrometry are reported in this paper, which consists of four chapters. In chapter one, the atom trapping technique in atomic absorption spectrometry is reviewed and 46 literatures are cited. The mechanism and the procedure of atom trapping are studied in system.Chapter two consists of two sections. In the first section, A method is proposed for the determination of zinc and manganese by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) using atom trapping technique. In the experiment, the water-cooling system was advanced. In the second section, atom trapping flame atomic absorption spectrometry is applied to the determination of cadmium in Chinese herbs.Chapter three consists of three sections, which reports the application and studies of derivative atomic absorption spectrometry using the atom trapping technique (D-AT-FAAS). In the first section, the method is proposed to determine trace zinc in Chinese herbs. The conditions that effected on the sensitivity of the method are studied, and the characteristic of the signal of derivative flame atomic absorption spectrometry is illustrated. In the second section, the method for the determination of chromium by derivative flame atomic absorption spectrometry is described in detail. A water-cooled silica atom trapping tube is used in the paper. In the third section, the contents of lead in Chinese herbs are determined. The sensitivity of derivative method is 2 or 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of FAAS, the detection limit is improved 1 or 2 orders of magnitude. Satisfactory recoveries of 93.0-108.0% for lead are obtained with a relative standard derivation ranging of 2.9 to 4.2%.In chapter four, all of the studies in this paper are summarized.
