A method, hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry, for the determination of trace elements places more and more role in many fields, for its low detection limit and high sensitivity. This paper focuses on the application of hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry in determination of arsenic, mercury and selenium. The paper consists of four chapters. In chapter 1, the fundamental principle was described. The progress and the application of atomic fluorescence spectrometry are reviewed and the application of the method is prospected. Seventy-nine references are cited. In chapter 2, a method has been proposed for the determination of trace arsenic by hydride generation-atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS). Effects of experimental conditions on the fluorescence intensity of Arsenic were investigated and optimized. The proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of arsenic in ten kinds of Chinese herbs. The advantages of the method were simple, fast, sensitive and accurate. In chapter 3, a method for the determination of selenium by HG-AFS was proposed in this paper. The experimental conditions were optimized and the influence of co-exist foreign ions was investigated. The proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of selenium in ten kinds of Chinese herbs. In chapter 4, a method, hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry, for the determination of arsenic and mercury in traditional Chinese herbs. The experimental conditions and the instrumental operation parameters were optimized. The interference of coexistent elements in traditional Chinese herbs for the determination of As and Hg were investigated. The accuracy of the method was confirmed by the standard addition method. This method was proved to be simple, rapid and repeatable.
