Unsaturated polyester(UP) was modified by organic rectorite (OREC). Three series of OREC-modified composites (UPB1,UPB2,UPB3) were prepared by ORE , two different kinds of unsaturated polyester matrixs(which have different gel time) and two types of fibers(EW210 and CWR400-90 ). We discussed the influence of OREC on the viscosity, the gel time and the curing mechanism. The micromorphologies of cured-unsaturated polyester composites were analyzed by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to analyze the dispersivity of cured OREC-modified UP. We measured the mechanical properties of UP composites, discussed the factors effecting the properties of composites and the reinforcing mechanism of OREC-modified composites. At the same time, we investigated the resistance to medium of the composites, the violet light aging and the heat oxygen aging of the composites. The results indicates that the viscosity and the gel time of UP can be effected by OREC, but the curing reaction mechanism can not be changed by the loading of the OREC, the flexural strength of cured OREC-modified UP could be improved and the same as to the resistance to dampness and heat, OREC can significantly improve the mechanical properties UP/fibers composites, the value of properties of composites in which the OREC content being 2wt% was higher than that of other studied composites, and the damp heat-resistance and the alkali-resistance of the composites containing the OREC were improved when compared with the UP/glass fibre composites, the same as to the properties of the violet light aging and the heat oxygen aging of the fibre composites .
