Rapidly solidified Al85Y4Nd4Fe7, Al85Zr4Nb4Fe7 and Alg5Y4Nd4Ni7 (at%) alloys were prepared by melt spinning. As-quenched and as-annealed microstruetures were studied by DSC, XRD, TEM and HREM. The paper analyzed the influences on the microstruetures of the rapidly solidified Al-Fe alloy after the addition of Y, Nd and Zr, Nb elements, respectively. The amorphous forming ability and the thermal stability have been compared between AlgsY4Nd4Fe7 and AlgsY4Nd4Ni7 alloys; the amorphous forming ability and the thermal stability have been compared between Alg5Y4Nd4Fe7 and AlgsZr4Nb4Fe7 alloys;The study indicates that fully amorphous structure could be obtained in the rapidly solidified A185Y4Nd4Fe7 alloy ribbons and simultaneous precipitation occurs at room temperatures in the rapidly solidified A185Zr4Nb4Fe7 alloy ribbons. The amorphous forming ability and the thermal stability of the AlgsY4Nd4Fe7 amorphous alloy are higher than that of the AlgsY4Nd4Ni7 amorphous alloy. Those results can provide the theoretical basis for the application of the Al-Fe system alloys.
