To develop an effective and low-cost polymeric flocculant, the preparation of the compounds of oxidized starch and cationic polyvinylformaide(the compounds of starch/CPNVF) and their application in the papermaking industry were studied. In this paper, the regularity of the hydrolysis reaction, the structure of the hydrolysate and the charge property of the compounds were studied firstly. In chapter 3, those compounds were used to deal with the deinking wastewater which is difficult to treat with for its high colourity and turbidity. It was found that the compounds have good flocculation property. Some of them are even better than CPNVF. At the same time, both the main factors influencing the flocculating effect and the flocculation mechanism of the compounds were studied. In charter 4, the effect of the compounds on drainage and retention of pulp were investigated. The results show that at the optimum condition, they can improve the retention of reed pulp over 10%, and the drainage time can be shortened by 93%. Furthermore, starch can be absorbed more in the existence of CPNVF, so that it can lower the cost of the paper. The compounds is expected to develop into an effective and low-cost flocculant for the starch which was used in this paper is a low-price and nontoxic polymer.
