Manufacturing has become one of the pillar industries for creating of human wealth, and it is also the basis on which the cultural and ideological progress of our human society can be made. However, it consumes tremendous amount of our limited natural resource and produces pollution during the process while it transforming the raw materials into a certain kind of products and the subsequent practical use and disposal of them. In view of this, it has become an very popular subject for the manufacturing to reduce the consumption of resource and minimize the pollution to the environment. So, it is imperative that the manufacturing must evolve into a clean and green industry. Machine tools, as the basic means for cutting or shaping machine parts, have profound influence on a series of factors involving in the manufacturing, such as work efficiency and product quality, costs and energy consumption, machine tooling, oil and coolant, noise level, work safety, and the disposal of cutting chips and waste fluids, etc. In the meantime, the design and building of a machine tool is also a process that will cost a great amount of resource and cause pollutions to the environment. At the present, the studies of green machine tool and manufacturing system have become an important branch of the general manufacturing industry. Among them, people have attached great importance in developing green gear producing machine tools. Especially, the dry-cut gear hobbing machines have attracted more attention for its high work efficiency and structural rigidity, green performance because of cutting oil needed. The Chongqing Machine Tool Works has developed such a machine-the model YKS3112 gear hobber, and this project is supported by the National 863 program, the national supporting program Class "A" for the projects initiated by the returned students. In this article, a study is elaborated around the developing of this machine. It studied the green features for a dry-cut gear hobber in general, and its design skill in particular, as well as the technology for assessment of its green performance, and some conclusions have been drawn based on the discussions mentioned above. The major points of this article consist of:1. After a discussion of the working principle of the gear hobbing process, and its features and applications, an analysis has been made on the construction and characteristics of a traditional gear hobber. Afterwards, the author proceeded to present a high-speed dry-cutting gear hobbing machine for the green manufacturing, and explained the targets in its design. Also, a description and comparison of green featuresof some foreign made high-speed dry-cutting gear hobbers.2. Studies have been made on the key technologies for developing a high-speed dry-cutting gear hobber for green manufacturing, it covering such areas as the machine's general layout, the transmission system design, the machine frame and the chip evacuation system, both tool and work spindles design, tooling systems, and the safety measures.3. The study of the working technology of a high-speed dry-cutting gear hobber with green performance. This involves in a study of the coated carbide sand HSS hobs by comparing their relative characteristics and cutting mechanisms observed in the process of dry cutting. The author further expounded the hob shifting, tool wear, and working accuracy in the dry-cutting process.4. The author presented a way for appraising of a high-speed dry-cutting gear hobber with green performance. A principle of the appraisement is first introduced, and then established an appraising system which covers two aspects-the machine's working performance and its green characteristics. Here, the author introduced some criteria, from which an appraisement model is built up. Finally a solution is found by using a comprehensive vague appraising system, which reflects the general value in terms of green performance-the greater the appraising value is, the better green performance the machine has.5.
