In this study, the effects of HRT and VLR on ABR performance in treating recalcitrant wastewater were investigated; the characters of water and sludge in each compartment were analyzed; the effects of sulfide on ABR performance in treating LAS wastewater were discussed.1. Under condition that HRT=72 h, VLR=0.5 kg COD/(m3d), the COD removal rate of ABR for PVA wastewater was keep in 90%; Under condition that HRT=72~55 h, VLR=0.83~1.31 kg COD/(m3d), the COD removal rate of ABR for LAS wastewater was keep in 60% at least. So the longer HRT is necessary for the ABR reactor for recalcitrant wastewater. The molecular structure of LAS is more complex then PVA, so degradability of LAS is worse than PVA.2. when the ABR remained stable, the COD removal in 1# compartment was about 50% of the total COD removal. It is very important to keep 1# compartment stable in the studies of ABR for recalcitrant wastewater.3. In this studies, pH always in 6~7.5 and became higher along the compartment. The effects of the different pH on ABR was little. Lower temperature could lead to acidulation of 1# compartment and reduction of pH, especially pH of 1# compartment. When pH<6, the COD removal rate of ABR for PVA wastewater reduced from 85% to 70%, the COD removal rate of ABR for LASwastewater reduced from 70% to 50%.4. VSS/SS in four compartment of ABR for PVA wastewater was 0.34,0.32,0.27,0.29 after 57d, VSS/SS in four compartment of ABR for LAS wastewater was 0.55,0.47,0.41,0.40 after 171d. The reason that VSS/SS became lower along the compartment is lack of nutriment in 3#,4# compartment, methanogenic bacteria was inhibited.5. When the ABR remained stable, 0.2-0.5mm granular sludge appeared in the ABR for PVA wastewater, 0.6-1.5mm granular sludge appeared in the ABR for LAS wastewater.6. Sulfide was found in the ABR for LAS wastewater. Finally, these sulfide would become in the ABR, H2S was very harmful to the ABR. For the ABR in treating LAS wastewater, HRT=55 h, VLR=1.1 kg COD/(m3d) is better..
