The oxy-fluoride germanate glasses co-doped with Yb3+/Er3+, oxy-fluoride silicate glasses co-doped with Yb3+/Ho3+ and oxy-fluoride borate glass ceramics co-doped with Yb37Ho3+ were prepared. The optimum composition of three types of glasses was discussed, respectively. The melting temperature and time, annealing temperature and time and the micro-crystallization process were also discussed by investigating the preparation techanics of the three types of up-conversion glasses. The up-conversion glasses were characterized by emission spectra, absorption spectra, transimittance curve, Raman shift, TG-DTA curve, XRD, refracive index. The relationship between pumping power and relative intensity of green and red emissions was discussed. Ground state absorption, excitation state absorption and energy transfer were used in discusing the up-conversion mechanism of the glasses and the pertinent up-conversion mechnism models of the glasses were proposed. Strong green emission peaks were obtained when the three types of glasses were pumped by the 980nm laser.
