Being light, abundant and cheap, easily processed, easily fimctionalized and modeled, polymers have been widely applied in fields of packing, agriculture, building, automobile, electrical equipment, et al. But the disadvantages of low rigidity, low strength and low toughness seriously limit their further applications in fields of high-performance structural materials. So brittle and weak polymers should be strengthened and toughnessed.At present, chemical modification techniques of copolymerizing, grafting and intercrossing, and physical modification including elastomer blending, rigid organic filler filling, signal rigid inorganic filler filling, fiber strengthening, and nano-particle reinforcing and toughing, have been investigated and designed, but some problems are difficult to solve. For example, the comprehensive properties of materials are weak, processing flowsheet is complex, or the costs of raw materials are high. For the purpose of toughing polypropylene(PP) material applied in automobiles, and ideal of strengthening and toughening polymers with compound inorganic particles(CIP) was put forward. The result is expected that the comprehensive properties of polymer composites could be improved by using simple composite crafts and cheap reinforcements.This work was focused on the surface modification of talc with coupling agents, on the preparation of talc/polypropylene(PP) composites, on the feasibility of automobile composites by industry-scale experiment and on the crystallization kinetics.In the industry application experiments, we use talc/PP composite in automobile parts including bumper, steering-wheel, dashboard, battery gutter container, and so on. At all points, it is demonstrated that this kind of materials can be applied in the automobile composites, and the materials properties need the corresponding technological requirements. Several models are also put forward on explaining inorganic particle filled polypropylene crystallization process on theory.
