Polyepoxysuecinic acid (PESA) which is free of nitrogen and phosphorus is one of the three green water treatment agents recognized through out the world. Being studied in many aspects because of its excellent performances although, the characteristic techniques for physical and chemical properties of PESA have not been standardized. This has influenced PESA's study and application to a large extent. In this paper, the molcular weight of PESA, the content of carboxyl group in PESA, scale-inhibition and corrosion-inhibition, the biodegradability, etc. were determined by many methods such as the IR spectroscopy, conductometry, Gel Permeation Chromatography(GPC), OECD301B standard method and so on.The determination results indicate that the accurate and intact molecuar weight data of PESA and the distribution can be achieved by GPC, the content of carboxyl group in PESA can be determined by conductometric titration,And the suitable condition of the titiration was presented simultaneously. The effective factors, such as concentration of the sample and the titrant, rate of titration were discussed in this paper.OECD301B standard method is an ideal method to determine the biodegradability of PESA or other polycarboxylates scale-inhibitors. The biodegredation mechanism of PESA is also discussed from molecular structure in this paper. And we conclude that the oxygen atom in its molecular structure makes PESA biodegredated easily.
