The microcosmic visage of nanocomposite, the toughening mechanism and the modification of PP and PP/elastomer by nano-CaCO3 were investigated systematically in this paper. The choice of nano-CaCO3 modified by different surface reagent, the choice of different elastomer, the processing method of the experiment were discussed in this paper. The modification condition of PP and PP/elastomer modified by nano-CaCO3 was investigated by testing of impact strengths tensile strength and bending modulus. Also, the microcosmic structure and the toughening mechanism of nano-CaCO3 were described and discussed on the basis of the results of SEM, TEM, DSC and XRD.The results of the experiments are: Via a adequately processing technology, nano-CaCO3 could be dispersed uniformly in the composites at a nanometer scale, and the toughness of the composite was improved notablely with its rigidity not declined. The investigation and analysis of microstructure shows that, the toughness of the matrix was caused by change of the crystallization structure of itself by nano-CaCO3 particle, thus the matrix could caused stress yielding while being impacted. uniformly in the composites at a nanometer scale, and the toughness of the composite was improved notablely with its rigidity not declined. The investigation of the experiment has produced some reference of PP's modification and processing, which could be also valuable for the further application of PP.
