NI-MPE (Non-Intermeshing Multi-Process Element) and intermeshing left-handed screw element with shallow grooves were designed according to geometry offully wiped twin-screw equipment. In order to know the performances of thecombined screw configuration with NI-MPE,3-D flow field simulation of thecombined screw channel with NI-MPE and the combined screw channel withnon-intermeshing common element were carried out by the ANSYS FEM package.Pressure profile, velocity profile and viscosity profile of the two combined channelswere obtained. Post-processing program was developed to calculate throughput, backflow coefficient, shear rate and shear stress. And the post-processing results ofthe combined channel with NI-MPE were compared with those of the combinedchannel with non-intermeshing common elements. The mixing ability and extrusionproperty of the combined channel with NI-MPE was also analyzed. At last, a series of experiments were performed to testify the flow fieldsimulation results of the combined screw configuration with NI-MPE. It proved thatthe flow field simulation with ANASY was feasible and credible. The fillingmodification experiments were carried out to analyze the mixing effect of thecombined configuration with NI-MPE. These experiment results showed that theimpact strength, tensile strength and bending strength of samples extruded by thecombined configuration with NI-MPE were higher than those extruded by thecommon screw configuration.
