The styryl dyes are important organic functional dyes. Recently, with the development of relative technology, they are widely used as new fluorescent probes in labeling the biologic macromolecules, used as recording media, and non-linear optical materials etc.In this paper, the structure and quality of styryl dyes as well as their synthesis and new applications are briefly reviewed. With the assistance of microwave irradiation, two series of styryl dyes were quickly synthesized in the absence of any solvent. Meanwhile, all of them have been characterized by ' H NMR, MS, IR, UV-vis and elemental analysis. In order to get optimized experiment conditions, we also examined the effect of microwave power and irradiation time on yield. The microwave-assisted solvent-free preparation of styryl dyes offers several advantages including short reaction times, cleaner reaction profiles and simple experimental / product isolation procedures. It is an important approach to realize green synthesis of styryl dyes.In order to improve the properties of styryl dyes and expand their applications, six novel styryl-4-pyridine cyanine-β-cyclodextrin dyes were designed and synthesized in this paper. The products have been identified by 'H NMR, IR, UV-vis and elemental analysis. The UV-vis absorption in solution and solid film, fluorescence and stability of styryl-4-pyridine cyanine-β-cyclodextrin dyes were studied. The results show that their have a good absorption properties and fluorescence properties. The stability also was enhanced in some degree.
